Sephora for My Birthday

Anyone who has heard me talk about beauty, makeup or my travels will have come across a Sephora story or two at some point.

I was first introduced to Sephora in 2012 in the USA by Contiki buddies I was traveling with. The sheer size of the many stores we visited was so awe inspiring… so many brands and products under one roof!

The mothership was calling…

I remember stocking up big on products that were either more affordable than in Australia or not yet available {some still aren’t!} Purchasing multiples of many and finding new brands to love.

On my next overseas trip, last year {Paris, UK & Dubai} I prepared to spend big and stock up again as Sephora still did not have a store in or ship to Aus. I fondly remember looking for a certain brush in Dubai and having a massive tip sharing conversation between two assistants and I.. it was fun and again I wished for something of it’s magnitude here.

You can imagine how thrilled I was when Sephora confirmed they were coming not only to set up Sephora Australia but in Sydney – a mere two hours from my area. Thrilled.
The mothership is coming.

The official opening date has been confirmed as Friday 5th December.

Which is 14 sleeps away and the day after my birthday. Happy Sephora Birthday to me! I can’t wait to see what prices are like, and it also means that the brands they are bringing with them are ones I won’t need to stock up on when I am in the USA at the end of the year. I am hoping to make a trip down as soon as possible.

Elle magazine provides a full list of the brands that will be available – will be more to come…I am most excited for Kat Von D, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Tarte and the Sephora Collection. I am hoping Urban Decay will be added to the Australian brand list shortly too.

Add a small spark…

I have been feeling pretty low lately. It will take me a little bit to get back to normal, to the happiness I found during my 100 days challenge (I really really will do an overview post soon) … but today I did things for me.

I had a day where I just followed my instincts for what I wanted to do. I had errands to run, work or housework today but I left those and attended to a day that would be good for the soul.

I first enjoyed a sleep in, followed by a walk with my dog and then a stroll over to my favourite beauty salon Little Miss Gorgeous for a manicure I had booked in this morning. It was while there, talking to the beauty therapist that I decided I needed to inject and add some sparkle to my day. I have an obsession with all things glittery, sparkly or embellished {most likely a leftover piece of my childhood}… I had been about to choose a standard colour for my nails, when I came across a colour called ‘ruby glitz’, the name and colour reminds me of Dorothy’s brilliant shoes in The Wizard of Oz … they glisten in the light and are making me smile when I look at them.

image

My afternoon consisted of playing with makeup and watching multiple episodes of an old favourite Gilmore Girls. It was during this that I injected more sparkle through eye makeup, creating my look for today’s Fox in Flats Style Dare and I have loved it so much that I’m only just taking it off now.

I will do a post soon with a ‘how to’ for this glitter eye look,  for now head to my instagram feed {saregiak} for a hint of the products and other shots!

Hope you’re having a good night,
More soon!

Guest Post: Tips to Improve Skin Texture

It has always been the dream of every woman to achieve extra smooth skin. However, this desire can seem so out of reach for most women as they just seem unable to achieve it. This can be mainly attributed to the ineffective methods that most women use. The following ways though, can be used to achieve great texture for your skin.

Stop using anti-aging products

Many women use many anti-aging products in a bid to make their skin look younger and smooth. Overuse of these products though, can actually work to your disadvantage. They can cause irritation, make the skin appear more red and flaky. Fine lines can also appear on the skin as these products can cause dryness so it is probably best to stop using them.

Less washing of the skin

It has long been believed that if wash often, your skin will become smooth and soft to the touch. Too much washing can however, bring in the opposite effect. This is because it can remove the skin’s natural moisturizing oils and cause dryness and redness. It also overworks the skin causing it to produce more oils to provide protection and one can thus end up with dry yet oily skin.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation really has gained a bad reputation as it is thought to dry and thin the skin. This is however not true as it really helps to remove the dead skin on the surface. It also helps increasing cell turnover making the skin produce moisture bearing properties. Exfoliation also helps in collagen and elastin production and all these properties combine to give one smooth skin. Caution should however be observed as overdoing it can give bad results.

Good diet

Diets are not only meant for those who wish to shed extra pounds because a good diet can go a long way in improving your skin. Foods rich in omega-3 oils and lean proteins help the skin retain moisture. In addition, foods rich in anti-oxidants and minerals such as magnesium are also good in improving the texture of skin.

Hydrate

This is probably the most basic move you can use to make your skin smooth. Water goes a long way in making your skin more elastic and improving its texture. Failure results in dry rough skin so it is extremely important that you get enough water and other fluids to maintain a smooth skin.

Moisturize

It would be extremely dumb to want smooth skin if you do not moisturize. Do it as often as possible, preferably twice in a day. This will ensure that your skin is optimally hydrated and the cracks on the surface of the skin are well sealed hence making your skin achieve a smooth texture.

The above were just some of the ways that one can improve the texture of your skin. Follow this few tips and the results will be mind-blowing.

Gold Eyeshadow

Gold eyeshadow is the new white. Seriously. I stopped using white shadow to ‘open’ my eyes and switched to gold about six months ago. I love it.

Gold eyeshadow doesn’t have to bring connotations of over the top, showy looks, it can be used for a glam night out but also as a casual day look. Use it in the day time to brighten your face, make eyes pop and add some subtle glam.

The best part is, gold eyeshadow is super easy, you don’t have to layer it to build colour and it looks fantastic even without other makeup! Just swipe some on your eyelids and the inner corner of your eye, for an instant pick me up {it is my go to if I am tired} and it looks good on all skin types/tones.

If you do want to dress it up from day to night but still keep it low-key, try adding tinted moisturiser, a flick of eyeliner, some mascara and a berry toned lip.

SensatioNAIL Product Review

One of my favourite things to do is go to a beauty salon and get my nails done. This little bit of pampering gives me a mood boost and I love the look of manicured nails.

For the last year and a half I was periodically getting Shellac manicures, a gel enamel that lasts for around two weeks. I’ve recently cut my spending habits to save for a few things.
Ironically it was after I decided to stop getting my nails done that I received an email from the PR team behind SensatioNAIL – a company providing kits to achieve salon standard gelnamel nails at home.

image

SensatioNAIL sent a starter kit which includes everything you need to achieve nail look {pro LED lamp, gel cleanser/primer/polish/base and topcoat, lint-free wipes, nail buffer, manicure stick} as well as a detailed but simple to understand instruction card.

image

image

This card has instructions to prime, paint, set and then remove the gel, with handy pictures in case you need an example.

I was also sent a removal kit, {so I can remove and continue to maintain manicures at home} and two extra colours.

image

image

I set aside Thursday afternoon to play around with the kit. I settled on a silver glitter enamel as it complemented the dress I planned to wear to a concert that night. I found everything easy to use and the instructions easily understandable. The finished quality feels exactly like salon finish. I followed the provided instructions exactly, as a result my nails were completely dry. I went on to curl and style my hair, plus put makeup on and my nails stayed perfect!

image

One aspect that wasn’t explained was how long the lamp stayed on for {has an on/off switch for power and then a button on top that turns the lamp on}, this information is needed because at different stages nails are cured for 30 or 60 seconds.

image

It isn’t a huge dilemma, just good information to have. I timed it myself at 30 seconds.

I am excited to try the other colours provided, and will update this post with how long the enamel stayed on for. Product states up to two weeks. When using the glitter polish, if a heavier cover is required, I would recommend a third coat or to put it over another gel polish for extra depth.
Although I am currently enjoying the splash of sparkle two coats gave!

Have you tried this product? Is attending to treatments at home something you’d consider? I highly encourage you to try it!
The information I received states each bottle is enough for ten manicures. There are a range of different kits from starter, essentials and removal {view kits here} with a variety of colours {I received Silver Glitter, Kitten Heel and Scarlet Red}.

I found that from setting up, attending the manicure and packing away took just over 20 minutes, which is ideal to fit into an at-home-routine.

I hope this review was helpful, I am thrilled to have beautiful, good quality nails that I can do myself {I’m also going to treat my Mum to a Mani this weekend!}

7 Day Lipstick Dare – Challenge Accepted

It is the colour of Dorothy’s shimmering shoes, Ariel’s hair and the one that makes for a high impact outfit on most brunettes … that’s right, the colour is red.

{seriously if you have dark hair and DON’T have a statement piece of clothing in red – go get one. It is a must for days when you can’t decide what to put on or want some wow factor}

Anyway I am getting off track. Foxy-lady, style dare extraordinaire Andrea from Fox in Flats announced last week that this week her Style Dares were starting up again and it is been kicked off with a bang! The Red Lipstick Dare is a dare to wear red lipstick every day, for one week. I love these kind of dares as it forces you out of your comfort zones and in this case, takes something that many women would consider an evening or formal occasion look to the brightness of day. I have taken part in Andrea’s month long dares previously and attempted a 7 day hair one but I had never taken the red lips dare. The past year or so I have been loving red lipstick and have worn it often – so I jumped at this dare. Click the link above for more information on the dare + A’s great tips at making red lips last!

redlipstick dareI am house-sitting currently and was surprised to find that I had many of my red products, a couple I had purchased recently to try and one had arrived in a prize pack I won. I am without my trusty Smashbox red lippie, but I have enough for 7 days – different product each day. The main brands I am using are Savvy, Ultra3, Models Prefer and Bite Beauty.

red lipsticksWhat I love about red lipstick is the confidence it can bring you. I also love that there is a shade for anyone – from the lightest of corals to the dark plums and mahogany. You can rock the look as sweet flower child, rock chick, glamour queen, edgy punk. Something for everyone – it shines with attitude, spunk, and is so womanly. Two lips never looked so good 😉

I have been sick, and despite not feeling like going out and been told by my GP to do nothing but rest, drink fluids and watch movies I have stayed determined to complete this dare. So I have. No makeup, hair unwashed and red lips and it has lifted my spirits definitely… as Elizabeth Taylor famously stated, “Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together…” well Liz I’ve tried, water or Mum’s cure all lemon-honey-vinegar drink in hand, red lips and a blanket on the lounge.

red day oneA touch of Snow White look here at the GP (used Savvy lipgloss ‘Cinderella’ for light berry base + high pigment pencil lipstick ‘pomegranate’ from Bite Beauty on top)

red day twoRed lips watching chick flicks… (Laura Mercier lip liner + Savvy ‘mahogany’ lipstick with a Sephora shimmer gloss in ‘night out’)

red day threeRed lips and my Mum’s home remedy cure all (lipstick is Ultra3 – Cherry Wine)

Three days down, four to go! Hopefully I can kick this sick business to the curb and actually take some good pictures where I am not trying to hide my face! It is good to know though, that even in my pjs, red lips still feels Glam!

Also, it is not too late to join. You don’t have to complete the same 7 days as me – you can start the 7 Day Red Lipstick Dare at any time, to complete it you just need to have red lips for a week straight.. I’d love to hear if you are playing along so I can look out for your pics or posts! All you have to do is upload your shots and use the #redlipstickdarefoxinflats on instagram or twitter.
