Kooklah Participates – Shop What You Got Challenge

Last year I discovered someone who became a favourite blogger of mine, Jo from iCurvy and then joined her 2013 challenge to “Shop What You Got”. A challenge that asked you to nominate 30 items of which all your oufits for November would be styled from (does not include uniforms, gym gear, pjs or underwear). The idea is to create a capsule wardrobe. Last year this included clothing, shoes and accessories like belts and scarves. I made sure to choose items that had colour, patterns and interesting details as I wanted to challenge myself and step away from the ‘easy’ option of monochrome. Here is a snapshot of last year’s list. {I had one ‘exemption’ day that I’d nominated up front due to attending a black tie wedding}

2013

This year, the rules are slightly different, belts and scarves no longer count and can now be used like accessories such as statement necklaces to lift, add to or change an outfit – I felt an immense amount of freedom! More choice for items! Read Jo’s overview of the challenge at #shopwhatyougot

{if you feel inspired to join, do! It isn’t too late, double up on outfits or start your own period of 30 days, one lady started at the middle of October due to travel commitments, or just tap in #shopwhatyougot in your social media accounts for daily inspiration}

As Jo mentions, you will take more risks, gain a greater appreciation for the items and discover outfit combinations you had never thought of. Last year those items became some of my most loved and I have worn them often – some made this year’s list!

Below is my list for #shopwhatyougot 2014…. but first a few insights into my collection.

image

Snapshot sneak peek of clothing items {actual shots of items below}

I have included:
* the dress I will wear to my work Christmas party
* varied bright colour and patterns
* items that I needed to get more use out of
{I included less used items for two reasons- I recently had surgery and cannot wear certain fabrics as they irritate the healing suture lines and also because if I find the less used items difficult or not styled as often during this challenge they will be donated at the end}.

I have not included:
* heels – just wedges
* my chambray shirt {it can sometimes be a crutch item for me, I can always pair it with new outfit combinations I create after the challenge}
* jeans as I cannot stand them yet against my healing incision sites
* leather – I recently donated my much loved leather jacket as it no longer fit well

Celebrate Life’s Snapshots

One of my favourite sayings is by writer Robert Brault, “Enjoy the little things in life… for one day you’ll look back and realise they were the big things”, I think this is very true. It can be so easy to get caught up in the routine of life, get weighed down by the hits and overwhelmed with ‘the big picture’.

Often the moments I have looked back on and loved most dearly are ones that were seemingly small at the time. Like spontaneously deciding to go dancing with four gal pals after seeing the Footloose remake at the movies {we went home and dressed in 80s inspired outfits, met back out and danced the night away, yes to the theme song and completely sober}. Or taking a walk in Paris after dinner and looking up at the moment the Eiffel Tower lit up and sparkled, a quiet night turning into an all nighter in San Fransisco, a sunny day off, last minute catch ups with friends, going to see After the Fall play with high school friends and standing front row to our favourite song reminiscing. That photo in front of the departure sign before you board a plane or even just spending time taking solace that you have been granted another day, another chance…

I think small moments of our lives are incredibly important, and should be celebrated. There will always be the big attention grabbing moments. But every day you can celebrate a small one… a snapshot of life.

Inspired by these thoughts, Kooklah has some new hashtags which we’ve begun using – and we’d like to invite you to the party! So far there are four, and if you choose to join in, you can use them for our meaning or your own. There are no rules, no rights or wrongs, you can use them once; daily; weekly or not at all. We have simply chosen to celebrate and wanted to extend the offer. Below we have given some examples, and if you search using the tags on IG and/or twitter you can see our shots!

image

Examples and hints to meanings (think outside the box too!)
*many of the examples can be used for more than one, but I didn’t want to repeat examples – use the tag your way*

#snapofstyle – this could be a snapshot of a whole outfit/look or a small part of it (contrasting colours, accessories, a small glimpse), it could be a sassy statement, street art, quote, architecture…

#snapofbeauty – again the shot can be as big or small as you like, beauty looks, lip shot, no makeup, a beautiful/lovely friend, mother nature, something eye catching, a moment that made your heart skip a beat, love, joy, acts of kindness

#snapofbliss – a moment of relaxation, exhilaration, relection or happiness. Your own piece of paradise, hope, peace or love. A child’s smile, mess, family love, a book, candle, nature, or memory.

#snapoftravel – could be your daily route, walk, footpath. A new adventure, city or country to explore; items you are taking,  memories you are making. Wanderlust, inspiration. Inner travel; growth, change..

They can be interchangeable,  you may be able to use them all. I can’t wait to see a different perspective or meaning that someone else may use these for. I find it increases my own happiness and I am even more grateful for my life and everything around me.

I hope you like the idea. Would love to read your thoughts… if you have suggestions for future ‘snaps’, let me know. You can reach out using the blog/twitter/IG/email/facebook.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend dolls,
Sarah Xo

Missoni for Target…

One of my favourite brands is Missoni, this Italian brand has a very distinct style with use of bright, vibrant hues, contrasting patterns {swirls, zig zags, graphics} and varied textures.

Each item is striking. Easily identifiable by the above features and makes a statement.

Perfect for parties, events, paired with basics or neutrals for a fun look and absolutely perfect for the girl who doesn’t want to “fit in”, in these creations you will stand out – and for all the right reasons.

Thus far I don’t own any designs from Missoni… Can you imagine how excited I was to find out that Target has collaborated with Missoni to create a Missoni for Target Collection? I think this is an incredible pairing, and will allow fashion lovers of all kinds of budgets to attain a piece. The collection is not soley limited to clothing, according to the overview from Target it will also include swimwear and homeware. A collection of over 200 pieces which will be available this year from October 8th, {if you click the collection link you can sign up for email updates and special information in the lead up to the launch}.

Below I have included some shots of Missoni designs, and I am excited to see how this collaborative collection will compare! Watch this space! {All images from missoni.com}

Bath Items (set of towels)

Are you a Missoni fan too? What items are you looking forward to? I am thinking new swimwear that I can put to use in Mexico and Hawaii next year plus a shift dress or two. Are you loving the increasing amount of designers collaborating with discount department stores, if so what has been your favourite?

Portmans Cargo Style Jean – Product Review

A couple of months ago I purchased two pairs of jeans from Portmans as I desperately needed some new ones that fitted properly. I was replacing a black and berry pair with my trusty dark blue jeans safe in my wardrobe.

I settled on the cargo style jean from Portmans – in khaki and black.
They have a soft, relaxed feel with good tapered tailoring throughout the leg. The fit is good. I find them perfect for casual days or dressed up with a fancy shirt and blazer for dinner or drinks.

There are side pockets which fit a phone or keys in easily.  Faux pockets are on the front with zips, they create a good aesthetic whilst maintaining the streamlined design of the pant. Down the bottom are zips, which can be worn done up to ‘hug’ the calf and ankle or undone to drape over shoes.. my favourite way though is to half zip and fold up the unzipped section in a cuff. It is relaxed and looks particularly stylish when wearing patterned or embellished ballet flats.

I have found the sizing to be true to size and comfortable.

The one detail that I have taken dislike to, are the “back pocket flaps”, there are no pockets, just the flaps.

image

After the first wash whenever I wear the pants I am really aware that often the flaps flip up which either creates bumps if worn under longer garments or looks funny. Something minor but it is a shame they weren’t fastened (even a stitch or a button) or reinforced in some way to reduce the frequency of this.

I still love them and wear them often, they are super comfortable and offer a good fit without restriction.

Kooklah’s Shots Week One – Fox in Flats Style Dare

In my previous post, ‘Kooklah Participates Fox in Flats Style Dare’, I wrote about how much I love the photo styling challenge,  the community it has allowed me to come in contact with and how it can help add some spice or spark to a wardrobe by revitilising items that may normally be passed over.

Week one came with much excitement! It had been awhile since a Fox dare and we were keen to get back into things. It was fabulous to see past Fox in Flats style dare lovers taking part and been joined by new women – it has given me new accounts to follow,  inspiration for styling and more women to cultivate a relationship with.

Below I have included my week one shots as well as one of my favourites from a different Instagrammer. You can find my account and/or follow it on instagram @saregiak

Week One #foxinflatsstyledare
Day One – Neck Party

image

Kicking off the month with a monochromatic neck party that took a step away from my usual heavily embellished statement necklaces and was paired with a dash of sparkle from a silver glitter cardigan. {Necklaces from Big W and Equip – not recent; cardigan from Blarney Wool Mills}

Day Two – Red Lipstick

image

Love me some red lipstick! This was a fun day, the sun was shining and it made me really happy, so I decided to head outside for a selfie of a different kind with a hint of pout. Paired the red with some leopard print. {Lipstick – “Infrared” from Smashbox Cosmetics}

Day Three – Tuck It

image

Pairing my new cosy, red knit jumper with a chambray shirt tucked underneath with ponte pants tucked into boots – inspired by the 90s! I also tucked a statement necklace under the shirt collar and underneath the jumper. This meant once I took off the jumper there was an instant outfit redo! {Jumper from Portmans; necklace from Lovisa}

Day Four – Americana

image

An ode to our American counterparts celebrating Independence Day. I wore an American ‘Berkeley’ college shirt with a red cable knit and a red pout. Happy 4th July! {shirt purchased from San Fransisco College Store; same lipstick from Day Two}

Day Five – Sparkles

image

Worked this day so went subtle with shimmer eye shadow and a sparkly black, embellished headband with a quiffed ponytail. {Headband from Equip; eyeshadow Essence ‘frosted apple’ from Priceline}

Day Six – It’s All White

image

This was a brand new outfit pairing for me, I don’t believe I have ever worn all white! I think I’ve been hesitant to do so before due to my ‘porcelain’ coloured skin, but I found it complemented. Wore a tailored white blazer over a basic white long sleeve shirt with my pearl and glass statement necklace. Added a tangerine lip to prevent total washout. {Blazer from Portmans; necklace from Lovisa – also worn day three; lipgloss from Sephora Collection – glossy gloss range in ‘Peach Me!’}

Day Seven – HIS

image

Spent that evening rockin’ an old The Living End tour shirt that was originally my brothers – something I’d gifted him post gig. No longer fit him so I reclaimed it, pairing it with a leopard print kimono and ponte pants.

KOOKLAH Loves…
The look I have chosen as my favourite for week one, is a shot from Day Six – It’s All White. Super hard to choose just ONE shot, but I chose this one as it has a relaxed yet high-fashion feel and is impeccably styled.

Do you know who this is? If not make sure you check her IG account out! This is Barbe, fashionista, leopard print lover and self confessed Zumba addict (IG account – @fashionista_in_suburbia). I am so inspired by this look and the varied uses it could have from shopping, brunch, afternoon drinks and parties in the sun. For more from B, head to her blog – Fashionista in Suburbia.

Kooklah Participates – Fox in Flats Style Dare

One of the things I have had most fun with in the last year or two is completing in challenges on Instagram … I feel like it is my own world, and I get to connect with amazing, like minded people on various topics, via the power of photography.

Out of all the challenges I have taken part in, one of my favourites is the Fox in Flats Style Dares and I am so thrilled that Andrea decided to create one for this month, July! The idea is that you look at the list where there is a prompt for each day and then incorporate it into your outfit for the day, either an aspect or to style your whole look. Think outside the BOX! Below I have included the list, in the introduction post for July, Andrea includes some amazing tips and examples – you can read it all here.

foxin

Not only do you get some daily inspiration to add some spice to your look, but you also get the chance to interact and have fun with an amazing, supportive and beautiful group of women. You can share across any medium – Instagram is the most popular {I share mine on IG, twitter and the Kooklah Facebook Page} using the tag – #foxinflatsstyledare …

Soon I will upload my looks from week one. For now a past post to show some of my past looks, for FIF dares! People’s Choice – March 2013 {a fun way to sum up the month and look at what I liked compared to my fellow IG pals}.

Are you taking part in this challenge? If not – join! It is not too late. My handle is saregiak if you want to check out my shots and follow for daily insight into the face behind KOOKLAH.
