Epcot Styling for Kendra

When it comes to fashion and styling, there isn’t much I love more than putting together a look for a specific style, occasion or event. I do this regularly not just for myself, but for friends and family as well.

This week I received an email from Kendra Thornton who is a seasoned traveller and travel expert from the USA. Kendra is holding a fashion challenge to assist with planning looks for an upcoming trip. She is off for a fun, family weekend at Florida’s Epcot {a theme park in Walt Disney World} and is looking for some style inspiration. The aim is to have outfits that are fashionable yet functional and can be worn day or night..

I was lucky to be reached out to by Kendra in admiration of my own style, to put together an ensemble that fulfilled the brief I was given.

Here is the brief from Kendra:

“A trip to Orlando is a fun-filled opportunity for the entire family. Whether I’m spending a day with the family at Epcot or escaping for some romantic time with my husband at a lounge or nightclub, I know I’ll enjoy my time in Orlando! I’ll have the best time when I look and feel confident and comfortable! This is why I created “Kendra’s Fashion Challenge.” Perhaps I’m a little embarrassed about this. But as a mother of three children I could use some help getting fashion forward ready. I’m looking for some feedback from my favourite fashion bloggers concerning my style. I’ll be taking those three wonderful kids to Orlando, and I know there are bound to be plenty of photo opportunities!  I don’t want to look dowdy in pictures! Specifically, I need help choosing an outfit to wear to Disney’s Epcot. I found so much information on Disney hotels and attractions on the travel talk site gogobot. After reading many reviews my husband and I chose to go check out their fantastic aquarium! Hopefully this will be some inspiration when planning my new look!

I have a deep fascination with the ocean and marine life. On this excursion, I get to share this fascination with my kids as we get to explore one of the world’s largest man made ocean environments. We’ll see over 4,000 sea creatures and learn about more than 60 different species of marine animals. During our time there, we will get a chance to touch and interact with many of the different animals. On the second-floor observation deck, we’ll be surrounded by marine life to gaze at and enjoy. The staff holds two fish feedings each day! I just hope I don’t get wet! I’m ecstatic to see what looks Sarah will choose for this adventure! Thanks to one of my favourite fashionista bloggers I’m sure I will look stunning while visiting Epcot!”

I started this challenge by styling two looks that could go from daytime fun with the kids to drinks with her hubby at night – with just a few simple tweaks! The idea behind this is that Kendra could feel confident to take this look straight to the bar with just a quick ‘fresh up’ stop at the hotel.

Look One: ‘Functional Feminine’ an outfit styled to feel feminine, fresh, fun {great for photo ops} plus appropriate for a trip to Epcot.

For day – pair lightweight, comfortable jeans and a monochrome colour block tank top with a bright scarf {could be worn tied as pictured, open/draping from back of neck or as a headscarf}, complementing but comfortable flats and an across body bag.
The scarf adds a pop of colour and can be used as a wrap if a cool breeze comes on. The bag allows Kendra to keep her hands free – ideal when assisting kids! I also added a pink belt for extra style-pop!

For night – this outfit is good to go, but for added glamour add a pair of heels {black pictured to complement the top} + a statement necklace to instantly dress up a casual look. For added sleekness I have added another belt option – either would work. Tie a knot in the strap of the across body bag and you now have a clutch! Pairing with a blazer will add sophistication.

Look Two: ‘Casual Edge’ an outfit styled to tick the functional box AND add some rock chic edge…

image

For day – pair a good quality black {or white} tee with patterned pants. Having a basic top allows the pants to standout – patterned pants are a must for any wardrobe, as they have great stylish impact with minimal effort. Keeping with the minimalistic vibe I kept accessories simple with a basic, long gold costume jewellery necklace, tan + gold accented sandals and wayfarer sunglasses. The bag I chose is a larger handbag but has both shoulder straps and a body strap, the across body bag from look one would also work.

For night – adding a lightweight kimono style jacket {jacket pictured has some embellishment on lapels} lifts this outfit as does the addition of some wrist bling and heels.

Both of these day looks could be packed with streamlining of accessories + shoes for increased practicality of packing for travel. I.e one pair of heels, one necklace & one bag …

I had so much fun working on these two looks that I decided to create a look specific for night that could be paired with any accessory, bag or shoe from above {I have included some examples too}

image

By using a little black dress {LBD} you suddenly create a canvas on which to create a look.
In the left-hand side of the picture I used a combination of accessories from looks one and two to highlight that accessories of either look could work. On the right hand side I have added some optional extra accessories such as an evening clutch. Great LBD styles for mixing and matching include peplum {pictured}, shift and wrap dresses – they are usually sleek with minimal embellishment.

Thankyou Kendra for this opportunity, I hope your trip is sensational, and that you feel fabulous throughout!

Stylish readers, I hope you have enjoyed this post and the looks I created. Do you have a favourite? Which one would you wear, my personal favourite is look two.

March Style Madness Week Four- Wrap UP!

As you should all by now know –  I am thoroughly obsessed and fascinated by the Fox In Flats and the beautiful foxy woman behind it all, Andrea. The guidelines of the style dare are pretty simple, you look at the list of prompts that Andrea provides which are allocated to particular days. Then, using that prompt, you style a look or outfit, and share on facebook, instagram, twitter, your blog – where is up to you! Use the hashtag #foxinflatsstyledare so people can find your shots. There are a huge amount of people who take part so the more unique or ‘outside the box’, the better!

March’s prompts:

Week Four consisted of lots of eyeliner, black, accessories and total styling fun! Here are the shots from this week (23.03.13 – 31.03.13) which I share on instagram (@saregiak) then linked to facebook and twitter (@sarahgiak). These dares have opened me up to a whole new world of real women who love and enjoy beauty, fashion and styling …great to connect with these women, we have begun following each other – I look forward to certain women’s uploads. Truth be told, we are a foxy lot!

Day Twenty Three – Rock Chic

Rock Chic-k …loooooved this day! Nothing better then dressing with edge and making an impact! I took inspiration from one of my favourite rock chicks Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders … rough quiff, dark eyes, red lips, pleated peplum top, black jeans and black ankle boots with zips. I chose a song to pair with this (also from The Pretenders), ‘Brass in Pocket’ “Got something, I’m winking at you … Gonna make you, may you, make you notice…”

Day Twenty Four – Zipped Up

One of my favourite clutches, tiered metallic material with zips. A great size and adds something a little different to an outfit. Can wear with a casual outfit as well as for more formal occasions

Day Twenty Five – Silver

This was a complete random pick for an outfit – was chosen as one of the highlight pics of the day by Andrea and I have decided I will be packing it for my Europe trip. I paired it with black jeans and basic ballet flats. A matte silver slouchy t-shirt and embellished silver flower necklace. LOVE!

Day Twenty Six – Bed Head
Bed hair- this day was a much needed excuse for a stylised bed head look.. quiff, weave, twist and a sneaky plait or two… no styling tools or brushes used.

Day Twenty Seven – Pearls

This is one of my favourite necklaces, a four strand pearl tiered necklace. Mid-length joining the strands is a bar of diamontes, adds a bit of spark. I have used this necklace to dress up as Holly Golightly for a Valentine’s Day viewing of Breakfast at Tiffanys one year. This day I paired with a simple black shift dress and wayfarers … an easy way to dress similar to Audrey’s Holly…

Day Twenty Eight – Black Beauty

I had a long 12hour shift this day so I decided to focus on my makeup for this style dare. I used black liquid eyeliner with a slight cat-eye and some grey eyeshadow. Added a touch of gold eyeliner to add some pop and provide contrast with the black. Some slicks of black mascara and the look is complete.

Day Twenty Nine – Memory Clothes

A lightweight button up shirt (plaid flanno inspired) worn open over a blank tank top and black skinny jeans. This outfit reminds me instantly of year 12 and the group I hung out with – music lovers and musicians with a love for house parties … one of the greatest and fun times of my life. Andrea chose this as one of the highlight shots for this day. I used my London travel book as a contrast between the past, present and future. Will be taking this shirt with me on my travels…

Day Thirty – My Mini Me

My Mini-Me is absolutely my cousin Isabella. I adore this little girl and we’ve had a special bond her whole life. She’s picked up things like ‘always carry lip gloss and tissues, wear a cardi and own a clutch’ from me … on this day she was away and I slept all day as I was between nightshifts. So I decided to pay homage to the many occasions where we’ve dressed alike. My favourite is my 21st – three photos in this collage where she’s in a pink dress and I am in a nude tulle dress – she told me that day that she ‘had to buy a new dress because you did’ and danced the night away with me and my friends. She is gorgeous and makes my world better.

Day Thirty One – Shiny

A silver beaded necklace that I had for a long time and barely worn. Great for some sparkle to distract from night shift tired eyes and no makeup. Loved it with a soft pink top, will be packing this to take away as I feel this will be a very easy accessory to add impact, especially after late nights!

I LOVE these challenges and am into April’s Style Dare from Fox In Flats … considering I am about to travel in two months I am finding so many outfit options or ways to lift an existing outfit combination to make it even better. FABruary Week Two!

Life got pretty busy in February, sorry I mean FABruary…
For those of you who are wondering if I have suddenly just changed the name of a month, you must have been living under a rock. Fabruary is the name given to a style dare by Andrea at Fox in Flats.

Anyway I was going to post each week with an update of my outfits styled via a prompt each day for those of you who do not connect with me via instagram ( @saregiak ) or twitter (@SarahGiak  @styleseekgirl)… I didn’t get past week one with updating but made sure to keep up the challenge each day – today I am going to fire off some quick updates of Fabruary and then talk to you about the style dare put together for March! We are only three days in, so if you would love to try this start now! (you can catch up the first two days of the month or just start from now).

Prompt list:

Fabruary Week Two 08.02.13 – 14.02.13

Day Eight: Noisy
Created a stack of bracelets to add to a beaded cuff. Total arm candy. Used mixed sets from Eqiup, Venice Beach (L.A), Las Vegas, Jewellers. Inexpensive and expensive mixed together. I wrote about this trend loved by Nicole Ritchie and Blake Lively in Hint of Glamour #3

Day Nine: Killer Heels
These were the heels I wore for my 21st birthday.. Loved them! They went perfectly with my dress which finished above the knee, had multiple layers including tulle. These are nude suede with leather strips, called ‘Spiderweb’ found at ZU Shoes

Day Ten: Bright
A bright red sundress and bright accessories hanging in my wardrobe

Day Eleven: Belted
Trialing outfits for my next trip (European adventure), decided to use the sundress from Day Ten and make different versions of an outfit. This is my favourite – perfect for a casual dinner / night out.

Day Twelve: Orange Lipstick
Used two products from Nutrimetics – a lipstick and a lipgloss to create a tangerine hue. Peach cheeks, mascara and defined eyebrows completed the look.
(Note: the products used I had recieved a couple years ago – I am not sure if they are available. I used Brilliant Shine lipstick in Mandarin and Shimmer Gloss in Apricot)

Day Thirteen: Flats
Pink/Nude hued ballet flats with tiered gold zips with a sneaky leopard print inside!

Day Fourteen: Quiff
I love a good quiff, and was quite disappointed that my first nightshift back at work co-incided with this challenge. This was taken five minutes after I got home (at 8am) after starting work at 7pm the night before. A quick quiff woven in twists finishing in a messy knot at the base of my neck. Quickly followed by sleeping all day!!

Seven Day Challenge (Hair Dare)

Due to the fantastic six degrees of separation Instagram provides I came across Fox in Flats who provides inspiration and hints for good style in motherhood. I certainly am not a mother, but I have fallen in love with this site and with the updates I get since clicking the ‘follow’ button (check out @foxinflats). They also have a facebook page click here. It is fun, stylish and there are dares!

The current one (which I only discovered yesterday) is a hair dare. Encouraging those involved to step out of hair comfort zones and try something different. I know my hair comfort (since I cut it short) is a looped ponytail (you know the half pulled through ponytail) – especially at work. So I decided I would accept the challenge, for the next seven days my hair would have to be different from the last.

Yesterday (Jan 17) was my day one – I had to go to work and it reminded me of those 1950s posters with the girls with headscarves tied in a bow around their head. I did a variation of this in that I formed a messy bun and used a headscarf only around the bun to form a bow. Add winged eyeliner and I was ready!

Keen to see if I can do this! I know it would have been so easy with my long hair so I was even more driven to accept this dare. I will update daily on here and then at the end (if I can complete it) I will post all the pics together..

Let me know if you are doing it too! Follow @saregiak on instagram or @sarahgiak on twitter to see the pics as they are taken. As always would love to read your comments or click me an email to kooklahstyle@gmail.com

Go on, style it up… I dare you! 😉
